Vehicle and Foot Pursuit Leads to Arrest

On Wednesday July 8th Corning Police Department Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on 49 year old James Smith in the area of Solano and West Streets for various traffic violations. Mr. Smith failed to stop for officers and proceeded to flee in his truck eastbound on Solano St at speeds of up to 80 MPH, failing to stop at red lights along the way. Officers pursued Mr. Smith to the area of Solano St and Marguerite Ave where his truck collided into another vehicle, finally resting on the lawn of the health center on the corner of the intersection. Mr. Smith then fled from his truck on foot down Marguerite with Corning Police Officers giving chase. Officer's were able to catch up to Mr. Smith where he was subsequently tazed and brought into custody. Corning Police Department Sergeant and his K-9 "Oso" conducted an article search of the area to attempt to locate any contraband that Mr. Smith may have discarded during the chase. Officer's conducted a search of Mr. Smith's Vehicle and located drug paraphernalia. Mr. Smith was also determined to be on Post Release Community Supervision. Mr. Smith was transported and booked into the Tehama County Jail for Felony Evading a Peace Officer, Felony hit and run, Felony Probation Violation, Obstruct Public Officer and Driving on a Suspended License. Unfortunately this situation is nothing new to Mr. Smith, as he has previously been involved in a pursuit with local law enforcement agencies.
